Qualitative vs Quantitative Fit Test: OSHA Compliance for Illinois Workers

If you’ve ever needed a respirator for work, you’ve probably heard the phrase qualitative vs quantitative fit test. But what do those terms actually mean? And how do you know which one you need?

At Sterchi Occupational Health in Yorkville, IL, we offer qualitative fit testing that complies with OSHA respirator fit test requirements. We’re here to help you understand the difference between these two types of respirator fit tests so you understand which test to book.

But First: When Does OSHA Require a Respirator Fit Test?

According to OSHA respirator fit test requirements, employees must get a respirator fit test:

  • Before the first use of any tight-fitting respirator in the workplace
  • Annually after that
  • If the respirator design changes
  • If you switch mask models or sizes
  • After changes that could affect proper fit of your respirator (like significant weight gain or loss, cosmetic surgery, facial scarring, or the installation or removal of dentures)

Qualitative vs Quantitative Fit Test: What’s the Difference?

Both types of fit tests are used to make sure your respirator fits well and seals tightly. But the way they test for that fit is very different.

A qualitative fit test (QLFT) is subjective, based on taste and smell. A quantitative fit test (QNFT) is objective, providing numerical fit measurements. The correct test type for you depends on regulatory requirements, the type of respirator you use, and your workplace needs.

Here’s a bit more about each type of fit test:

Qualitative Fit Test

Qualitative fit testing detects any leakage in your respirator to assess whether it forms a proper seal on your face. This pass/fail test typically involves using a test agent to challenge the seal of the respirator.

Here’s how it works: you’ll wear your mask under a hood while we release a test substance like Bitrex (bitter) or saccharin (sweet). If you can taste or smell it, the mask isn’t sealing properly.

This method is most often used for:

  • N95 fit testing
  • Half-face respirators
  • Dust masks or filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs)

Sterchi Occupational Health offers qualitative fit testing for just $75. It’s quick, reliable, and meets OSHA respirator fit test requirements for most low-to-moderate-risk work settings.

Quantitative Fit Test

A quantitative fit test uses a machine to measure the exact amount of leakage into your facepiece. It provides a numerical result called a “fit factor.” This test is usually required for full-face respirators or when workers are exposed to more hazardous substances.

What Type of Respirator Fit Test Do I Need?

Hopefully now you understand the difference between qualitative vs quantitative fit testing. But which type of test should you book?

Essentially, the type of fit test you get must match your mask and hazard level. According to OSHA respirator fit test requirements, qualitative fit testing is allowed for most tight-fitting respirators, whether they work by pulling air in (negative pressure) or pushing air in (positive pressure).

But there are a few exceptions, including if you’re:

  • Using a full-face respirator in a high-risk setting and you’re needing the highest level of protection (a protection factor of 50)
  • Using a supplied-air respirator (SAR) or a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) in demand mode (which is rare)
  • A firefighter using an SCBA for structural firefighting

In these cases, you need to be quantitatively fit tested.

For most everyday jobs that use N95s or half-face masks, however, qualitative testing is more than enough. That’s what we offer at Sterchi Occupational Health.
